Function intake manifold - on a machine, we know the working principle of the machine one step suction. In the suction langksh the engine requires air supply and fuel input through the intake channel to the intake valve.

In this case the existence of the intake channel becomes quite important considering this component will keep the air and ensure it enters perfectly into the cylinder space.

The definition of intake manifold is a special channel intended to drain air from the carburetor into the engine. Indeed, this channel is quite short because it is only as the air supply from karbu, but without the intake channel karb will be difficult to operate because the location is not possible.


The intake manifold function is as follows:

  • As a place air gets into the machine
  • As a place to make air mix and more homogeneous fuel
  • As the output channel EGR
  • As an evaporative channel output

If we look at the shape of this intake it may be quite unique because some engines carry a shell-like shape. It is intended that air and fuel mixtures are more homogeneous. But there is also a form of intake is quite simple because only a pipe that delivers air from karbu to the engine, such as on a motor that uses a single cylinder.

For Efi engine, intake manifold is also used as a place to put the injector because in gasoline engine injection, fuel will be injected in intake during step suction. Generally, the location of this injector is located near the inlet to the cylinder head,

As for the conventional cars, intake manifold is also used to operate vacum advancer on distributors. This is in accordance with the working principle of vacuum advancer working by utilizing the intake manifold vacuum. So we will see a hose from the intake to the distributor.

This inlet is made of various materials, used aluminum and carbon materials used because it is lighter and stronger. But the use of metal makes the deposition of gasoline during cold start is large so that now widely used plastic materials are designed specifically for stronger. 

On a motorcycle, the intake manifold may be just a hose. This is because the motor engine has only a single cylinder whose air flow is also centered (not divided in the other direction) so that the intake form is also simpler. 

There are differences in air hose and intake manifold. The intake manifold is different from the air hose, if the intake operates after the carburetor and intake also withstand the vacuum due to piston suction. While the air hose is located from the filter to the carburetor. This hose only serves to drain the air without being subjected to a vacuum. 

What if the intake manifold leaks? 

Possible problems with the intake leak are present. If this happens, the engine performance will fall apart. Why? the reason is because there is free air coming in from this leak location. While gasoline is set based on air flowing through the carburetor. Meaning that an intake leak would make the mix poorer. This will make the engine brebet to death suddenly.
